Ukrainian energy holding DTEK has received its first cargo of American LNG, the company’s press service reports.
On the morning of December 27, the Gaslog Savannah tanker delivered about 100 mcm of natural gas from the US liquefaction plant in Louisiana to the Greek LNG terminal Revithoussa.
According to DTEK, its European trading subsidiary D.Trading bought the entire volume. Working together with Greece and other partners, the LNG will be regasified and transmitted through the gas networks of the European Union and Ukraine.

“This delivery is part of a broader global effort to strengthen Ukraine’s and Europe’s energy security by reducing dependence on Russian gas. The delivery will take place a few days before Ukraine terminates the agreement on the transit of Russian gas to the European Union through its territory,” DTEK said.
D.Trading expects this cargo to be the first of a series of shipments from the US and is looking to expand its LNG activities to the northern part of Europe and the Baltic States. Earlier this year, D.Trading entered into an LNG purchase agreement with US-based Venture Global, which recently exported the first LNG tanker to Germany from its Plaquemines LNG plant.
“The arrival of this LNG shipment is a clear signal of DTEK’s determination to contribute to strengthening the energy security of Ukraine and Europe. Such cargoes not only provide the region with a flexible and secure energy source but also further weaken Russia’s influence on our energy system. We are very grateful to the United States for the strategic contribution they are making to Europe’s energy security through these supplies,” said DTEK CEO Maxim Timchenko.
DTEK explains that the supplies are made to Greece due to war-related restrictions on LNG transit through the Black Sea. In addition, Ukraine does not have its own LNG terminals, and the closest ones are the Greek Revithoussa terminal and the Polish Swinoujscie terminal.
