Gas imports to Ukraine rose ninefold in 2025 to 6.5 bcm

Natural gas imports to Ukraine in 2025 reached 6.47 bcm, nine times higher than in 2024 (724 mcm). This is stated in the ExPro material Gas imports to Ukraine hit a five-year high at 6.5 bcm in 2025.

Details

Gas import volumes in 2025 were also the highest in the past five years, since 2020. The increase in gas imports to Ukraine was driven by several factors, including a gas deficit following Russian attacks on Ukrainian gas production. In addition, low gas stocks in underground storage facilities at the beginning of the year contributed to higher gas imports to Ukraine.

The largest volumes of gas came from Hungary and Poland, which remain the cheapest routes for gas imports to Ukraine. Gas was also imported from Slovakia, and via the Trans-Balkan route, where a joint capacity booking product, Route 1, was launched in 2025.

The largest gas importer in 2025 was the state-owned company Naftogaz of Ukraine, with more than 5.5 bcm, according to ExPro estimates. In addition, natural gas was imported by the state-owned GTS Operator of Ukraine and by private companies.

The condition of domestic natural gas production and consumption volumes will directly affect gas import volumes in 2026 and in subsequent years.
