Ukraine officially stops transit of Russian gas

Starting from 07:00 Kyiv time on January 1, 2025, the Ukrainian GTS Operator officially stopped the transit of Russian gas through Ukraine after the end of the gas day on December 31.

The suspension was due to the expiration of the five-year contract for Russian gas transit, signed in 2019.

The Ukrainian GTS Operator has no nominations for entry into the Ukrainian GTS at the Sudzha and Sohranivka points (on the border of Ukraine and Russia).

Amid the completion of Russian gas transit through Ukraine, European natural gas prices reached €50.5/MWh (+5.5%) on Tuesday, December 31.

Ukraine has repeatedly stated that it will not continue transiting Russian gas, which gives Russia significant money to sell the resource.

ExPro reported that Ukraine has transported 148 bcm of Russian gas over 5 years under a five-year contract. In particular, in 2024, 15.3 bcm of Russian gas was transported.

Russian Gazprom has transferred about $6.2 billion to Ukrainian Naftogaz for Russian gas transit services through Ukraine under a 5-year transit contract from 2020 to 2024.

The last time Russian gas supplies through Ukraine were suspended was in 2009 (January 7-20) due to unresolved issues regarding gas supply and transit terms between Ukraine and Russia. In addition, in 2006 (January 1-4), Russia also stopped gas supplies through Ukraine due to disagreements between Naftogaz of Ukraine and Gazprom over gas prices and transit tariffs.
